Essential Techniques

Prep Is Everything
I've seen so many gorgeous manicures fail because they skipped proper prep. Clean nails are just the beginning. You'll need to gently push back cuticles (never cut them!), buff the nail surface lightly, and remove all oils with a nail prep solution.
Sometimes, I like to spend even more time on my prep than the actual polish application. Trust me, this extra 5 minutes makes your manicure last days longer. Oh, and always use a base coat — it's not just a sales pitch, it actually matters!

"After 12 years working with nails, here's what I know for sure: the secret to perfect gel application isn't in the polish, but in the thin layers. Three thin coats will always look better than two thick ones. When I train new techs, this is the first habit I correct. And wait the full curing time between each coat — those extra 30 seconds make all the difference!"

Shape Matters
The right nail shape can make your hands look more elegant and fingers appear longer. For shorter nails, try a squoval shape — it's durable and flattering on most hands. If you're going longer, an almond shape balances style with strength.
File in one direction only, and hold the file at a slight angle under the nail. This keeps the edge smooth and helps prevent splitting later.

Deep Hydration Ritual
Here's something most people miss: nails need oil, not just lotion. Cuticle oil should be applied daily — I keep a pen in my purse, car, and desk. Massage it in for better absorption. For a once-weekly treatment, try warm olive oil soaks for 10 minutes.
During Malaysian winters, I double up on hand cream at night and sleep with cotton gloves. Sounds odd, but the difference by morning is incredible!
Expert Color Application
Start with thin polish coats — always. Think you've loaded too much polish on the brush? You probably have. Wipe more off than feels necessary, then apply with three strokes: middle, then sides.
Wait at least two minutes between coats (I check my phone while waiting). For darker colors, a white base coat makes the color pop with fewer coats. And don't forget to "cap" the free edge by running polish along the tip to prevent chipping.

The Truth About Extensions
If you're considering nail extensions, here's what nobody tells you: they require regular maintenance. Plan for fill appointments every 2-3 weeks, and your natural nails will need recovery periods. I recommend taking a month-long break after 3-4 months of extensions.
When removing extensions, don't rush or pry them off. Soak properly in acetone (15-20 minutes, not the 5 minutes most people do), and they'll slide off without damaging your natural nails. Your future fingers will thank you!
